Architecture

We knew that we wanted to work with people who valued the local area as much as we did, and Pod was the perfect fit for that. Designing buildings and spaces which improve people’s lives, while respecting and enhancing the natural environment was paramount.

Interior design

Partnering with Meala Design, we were able to bring our ideas of Featherstone Gate living to life. Shelley worked closely with us and took the time to understand exactly what it meant to live here and translated that into an interior style.

Ecology

Featherstone Gate has been designed with a strong emphasis on ecological sustainability and biodiversity enhancement. Several key features and management practices have been integrated into the development to protect and support local wildlife.

Habitat Integration & Wildlife

Bird and bat boxes have been incorporated into the fabric of the buildings, providing essential nesting and roosting sites for various species. These include ten bat boxes placed at optimal heights and orientations to attract pipistrelle bats and sixty-eight swift boxes designed to accommodate these migratory birds. To promote biodiversity, native tree, hedgerow, and shrub planting is a central part of the landscaping plan. Species such as hawthorn, hazel, holly, and blackthorn have been selected for their ecological value, offering food and shelter for birds, small mammals, and insects. Special attention has been given to supporting hedgehogs, with gaps provided in garden fences to allow them free movement throughout the site, ensuring they can access and utilise different habitats.

Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) & Grassland Management

The SuDS area has been planted to ensure this new water management feature supports local wildlife. The management of this area, including the selective cutting of vegetation, is designed to also prevent the overgrowth of invasive species. Grassland areas within the development will be managed to encourage species richness. This includes a summer cut to promote wildflower growth and ensure that the grassland provides a valuable habitat for a variety of wildlife throughout the year.

Tree and Hedgerow Management

Native trees of local provenance, such as cherry, hornbeam, and maple, have been planted across the site, contributing both to the aesthetic appeal and ecological value of the development. These trees will be carefully managed, including irrigation during dry periods and pruning outside of the bird nesting season to minimise disturbance. Hedgerows, essential for many species, are managed to maximise their ecological benefits. This includes planting in a way that promotes structural diversity, allowing for natural regeneration and ensuring that they provide food and shelter throughout the year.

Preservation of Biodiversity Amidst Development

Although the development results in the loss of some grassland and scrub areas, efforts have been made to mitigate these impacts through the creation of replacement habitats. These include the planting of native species and the installation of bird and bat boxes. The overall management plan emphasises the importance of ongoing care and monitoring of the habitats to ensure their long-term sustainability and to continue providing valuable resources for the local wildlife.
